Car Rental Deposit in Morocco: How It Works and How to Avoid It

Most car rental companies in Morocco ask for a security deposit (the "caution" in French). It can be a hold on your credit card or cash left at the desk, usually between 3,000 and 10,000 MAD depending on the car and insurance. Below is how it works, where travelers get caught out, and how to avoid it altogether.

What is a rental deposit for?

The deposit (caution) is money the agency keeps as a guarantee against damage, fines, missing fuel or a late return. If the car comes back as it left, the deposit is released or refunded.

It is not a fee. But when it is blocked on your card it reduces your available credit for the whole trip, which matters if you also need to pay for hotels, fuel and tolls.

The three types of deposit you will meet

TypeHow it worksTypical risk
Card pre-authorizationAmount is blocked on a credit card (not debit) and released after returnRelease can take 7 to 30 days; blocked credit during your trip
Cash depositYou hand over cash and get it back at returnYou need a lot of cash and a signed receipt
No deposit (0 MAD)No funds blocked; damage is handled under the contract termsRead the terms for what is excluded

Problems travelers report most often

  • The card has no available limit once a large hold is placed.
  • The agency only accepts a credit card in the driver's own name.
  • The refund takes weeks and you have to chase it from abroad.
  • Small scratches that were not documented at pick-up are deducted.
  • Cash deposits taken without a written receipt.

How to protect yourself, whichever company you choose

  1. Ask for the exact deposit amount and method before you book, in writing.
  2. Take a timestamped video or photos of the whole car at pick-up, including wheels, windscreen and interior.
  3. Make sure every existing mark is written on the inspection sheet.
  4. Return the car with the same fuel level and ask for a signed return note.
  5. Keep the receipt for any cash deposit.

Renting in Agadir with a 0 MAD deposit

Auto Agadir works on a 0 MAD deposit policy: no card hold and no cash caution for standard rentals. You pay the rental price and the car is delivered free to Agadir Al Massira Airport, your hotel or your surf camp. The exact conditions, including what insurance covers, are on the no-deposit policy page and in the terms and insurance FAQ.

Tip: whichever agency you pick, a "no deposit" offer should still come with a written contract that states the insurance cover and exclusions (tyres, glass, underbody, keys).
